What a most amazing wrap-up to a fun winter session with @firstteeupstate !! The camradrie, life lessons, and growth in the sport is unmatched. The final class was kids versus coaches, and it was fun (and funny😅) to watch!

Hands down, the @firstteeupstate coaches have always been so kind, encouraging, welcoming, and supportive, and we are grateful to be a part of this community and journey.

WHAT A WEEK! 🦕📚🔬

We have officially jumped back into the swing of things in this new year, and let me just say… LIBRARIES for the win!

Not only did we spend our first day back doing school at our local library, but we were able to work on virtual classes at another library in our area, AND got access to the @ropermountain science center as a benefit of the library (YES, free passes with your library card!) — which was a huge highlight for us this week.

We are so grateful for the first week being so fun, action-packed, and full of learning. It definitely helped us ease back in after our Christmas Break.

We salute all those who have served, and we thank you for your service!

Growing up, I can’t say that I always understood the full magnitude of being a part of a military family, as well as the importance of my father’s 20+years of military service. Yet, as our kids now have the opportunity to learn directly from their grandpa about his service to our Nation — I gain a deeper appreciation for it all.

So, many thanks to all who have served and continue to serve. We thank God for your sacrifice!

Also, sharing a few highlights from the last few weeks of school. It’s days like today that we are truly reminded of how grateful we are for everything, and thankful for living in a country where we have the privilege to educate our kids in a format that works for us. 🙏

Schooling on the go… 🚙🚗

Some weeks, it truly “pays” to homeschool, and these last few weeks were one of those times!

We were on the road, up and down the East coast, visiting family, learning lots of history and geography, immersing ourselves in the Spanish language with the abuelos, and just enjoying all the city (and rural) sights and sounds.

Weeks like these remind us of our “why”, as we were able to keep our school flow going while also connecting with family and friends, and seeing what our Nation has to offer. We are so thankful for the call to homeschooling, as I truly believe it is a call, for many. And, grateful to have our kids be able to experience so many amazing places, and connect with so many amazing family and friends, teachers and mentors, and just learn together as a family.

30 DAYS HAS SEPTEMBER . . . 🍁🍂

September has come and gone, and so has our first month of school! We have been here, there, and everywhere, so far, but it’s been full of new friends, new lessons, and more growth!

From Spanish class to libraries; from globes to legos, we are really turning on the learning flow!

A few highlights from our September lessons:

With each month, and new season, comes new experiences, challenges, and opportunities to learn. And, every time we look back and reflect, we are amazed by all that we learn together! It’s in these moments that we are reminded of why we do what we do.

🙏 H O P E 🙏

This week, even in the middle of the challenges experienced in our world, and even in our day-to-day moments, was full of hope.

Hope for a great school year. Hope as we meet new friends. Hope as we learn new things. Hope as we improve in things we’ve learned before. Hope as we prayed for our Nation, and the lives of others. It was a week rooted in hope.

And much of the beauty in homeschooling is being able to have a front row seat in instilling, preserving, and encouraging hope in our children. But, not only our own hope, but the “hope and future” that God has set aside for them.

Experiencing their curiosity, seeing them excel in various things, hearing them boldly pray and reflect during the tough moments in our world, and watching their worlds filled with the fun and wonder of a school designed for them, gives me hope.

As His word says in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah‬ ‭29‬:‭11‬ ‭NKJV‬‬)

We are praying for your hope, too. That you remember the truth of the Heavenly Father’s plans in your lives.

📚All of our local libraries! There were special youth programs that we were able to take advantage of, and also the youth librarians were available for special lessons and tours, as needed. If you’re not utilizing your local library, do it! Such a great resource.

⛳️Fall session @firstteeupstate is back in session, and we are so excited for fun coaches, beautiful weather, and new golf friends!

🍃Nature explorations and times learning outdoors has been so wonderful. It’s not too hot, but also still embracing the warmer weather. God’s Earth is a great classroom to be in!

F I N A L S T R E T C H 💨

We only have 17 days left in the school year… but who’s counting?! 😅

This month has been a bit of a bounce back month, as we had a little bit of a rough patch in the month of April. But, like they say… “April showers bring May 💐💐…”

May has been filled with travel, time with family, field trips, city sights and just lots of fun and laughter. It’s been a much welcomed push as we work to end the school year strong 💪

And it’s been amazing to see our kids progress in so many areas — one being with their Spanish! (Shout out to @onlinespanishforkids ! … check them out as a resource if you’re looking to improve your kid’s language skills)

Overall, we thank God for keeping us, helping us manage the hard parts, and providing lots of room to celebrate the wins — both big and small!🏅

S P R I N G B R E A K🙌🙌

Christ is Risen indeed and we are taking the time to celebrate and take a break!

We have just a little over 30 days left of the school year, and it has been a trek!

We are so grateful for all the experiences we’ve had so far as we countdown to the end of the year and summer!

A little snapshot of what we’ve been focusing on this spring:

📚✈️We have been heavily into aviation science and building all types of planes (paper airplanes, model planes, boomerangs — pretty much anything that can take flight!). A lot has been inspired by @eaa AeroEducate. Check it out if you’re needing a resource!

⛳️Golf, golf and more golf! We just finished up a wonderful Spring season with @firstteeupstate (and thanks to Coach Jared!!) and looking forward to summer sessions. We have been working hard to boost our golf skills and knowledge (as we are late golf bloomers😅), and even took a trip to Augusta to experience the @themasters vibe. No, we didn’t have tickets😜, but we just wanted to be in the mix, and circled the parking area to catch the buzz, and at least see where the course was located to hopefully catch in real time next year! We were very excited to watch the livestream and know that many amazing golfers were just a stones throw away. We were definitely excited to see Rory McIlroy win (and cheer on the other golf greats!)

🌎We’re also excited to boost our Spanish lessons with @onlinespanishforkids after our break, and have been working hard with @rocknlearninc videos (along with other resources) in the interim. Check out @onlinespanishforkids as a resource if you’re wanting your kids to learn Spanish.

HOW ARE YOU??

When it comes to homeschooling, sometimes that question feels weighty and loaded. On one hand, it can feel fun and exciting — like waking up at 2am to catch the total lunar eclipse! And other days, it can feel like trying to keep your kids engaged long enough without them asking “can we dismiss now?!” Yet, when you look back at it all, you realize, your kids are learning, and you are being strengthened for the task at hand. And in case you needed the reminder — “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭13‬ ‭NKJV‬‬).

SCHOOL / LIFE LATELY…

Sharing a few smatterings of our school days these weeks, and reflecting on the truth that growth and learning in education comes in both big and small ways — the every day things, the routine things, the day by day things.

In the middle of the “everyday” flow — I’m so grateful for the beauty of God’s heavenly creations, seeing our kids embrace new skills (like reading in Spanish and improving in penmanship), doing more group arts and crafts projects, and remembering to hold fast to the fruits of the Spirit — with this month’s focus being JOY!

Praying for each of you that you hold fast to joy in this season — in the day-to-day, and even when things seem hard! Remember, change happens when you least expect it!

R A I N Y D A Y S 🌧️☔️

It’s raining, it’s pouring…

And we are doing our best to embrace this very cold and rainy day, when we just had a past week full of sunshine and warm temperatures!!

Just like the winter weather, we know there are shifts in our homeschool flows, and the best way to stay motivated and engaged is to make the most out of every shift and find the beauty in each season.

So, taking a moment to cheer on all of you, and share some highlights to this rainy day, and praise our kids for all the ways they have been embracing homeschool this year.

1️⃣ Hip hip hooray! Our kids have made it to their 💯th day! Guess I’m feeling like Dr. Seuss? Cat in the hat, much?😅 We wanted to find clever ways to celebrate this 100-day milestone, and, despite the weather, our kids have honestly enjoyed the entire day. So grateful for sunshine-y ☀️moments in the middle of rain

2️⃣ Libraries are for book lovers📚, and rainy days☔️, and fun times indoors — especially when you want to be out of the house, be in an engaging environment, but still be cozy and surrounded with everything you need for learning. One of our local libraries has been such a blessing for us this school year, and our kids have a great time… every time!

3️⃣ Three cheers for completing our @firstteeupstate Winter session⛳️🏌️🏌️‍♂️🏌️‍♀️PLUS Coach Derek and Coach Star have been wonderful. We met some new friends and re-connected with a few we’ve been tracking with for a little while. Most importantly, we had fun, and even the parents got to get some hitting time in during our sessions at @topgolf . Huge plus to still be able to play despite the weather! We even found out that the kids have been earning badges along the way on the @thefirsttee app, and we so much enjoy taking advantage of every benefit and lesson that #firsttee has to offer!

Now it’s time to settle in, after a day well spent (although a little wet and cold, but hey, who’s tracking 😜)

✨C H R I S T M A S✨

Whew! What a week… what a month… what a year!!!
It’s finally Christmas break at Montalvo Homeschool and we are so thankful for the break!!

Mama, tbh, was tired! So this week was all about field trips (@bigairlaurens was an amazing highlight), STEM projects (@masked.marble homeschool digital logic was such a great addition this week! — check our stories for a snippet), community service and outreach with our church, and just having fun (while managing to get in our lessons)!

We are very much ready to just enjoy the holidays, and (hopefully) relax from the daily school flow… though with homeschool, is it ever really a break 100%? Regardless, it will be nice to not have to keep a schedule and just flow.

Grateful for our kids inquisitive nature and curiosity and all the many things we learned and experienced in this part of the school year.

Looking forward to a refresh and then jumping back in in 2025!

It’s been a busy (but fun) week filled with lots of field trips and new adventures. One such trip I’m excited to highlight in this post is…. (DRUM ROLL🥁…please…)

🏌️‍♂️PGA TOUR SUPERSTORE⛳️

We finally got a chance to check out the new @pgatoursuperstore in our area, and so glad we did!

It’s apparently been a “lifelong dream” 🙄😅 (according to our six year old) to try a golf simulator, and this dream was definitely fulfilled!

It was so fun, and a great alternative during the cold and rainy weather, to enjoy this resource!

We also just so happened to arrive at the end of a @firstteeupstate all-girls event, so it was fun to run into some of the @firstteeupstate community, coaches, and staff while there.

The staff at PGA Tour Superstar were super helpful and friendly, and we’re looking forward to exploring more of the resources the store has to offer, as well as joining in on any future programming First Tee may have along the way.

SCIENCE🔭🌎

In the word’s of the host of one of our favorite science show’s right now, Science Max, this post is dedicated to SCIENCE!

As a homeschooling parent who is also board-certified as a pediatric nurse practitioner, fascination with all things science runs deep in our veins. From anatomy and physiology, to all things space and astronomy, we really enjoy learning about SCIENCE!

Yet, we are also committed to integrating God’s Biblical principles as it applies to His strategic and ingenious creation of this Earth and everything that we are as a result of Him. He is the Master Creator and we are constantly in awe of His glorious creation.

We are also so thankful for when He connects our family with brilliant individuals that are willing to engage our very energetic and curious kids, and share knowledge to the level of their advanced interests.

One such privilege we had was virtually chatting with our dear friend and scientist at NASA, Dr. Cassie Nickles. Dr. Cassie completed her PhD with SWOT or Surface Water and Ocean Topography, and works at NASA’s Jet propulsion Laboratory.

She graciously shared her experiences for our science lesson, and answered the many questions that our kids had. She also walked us through the SWOT website, which is available for the public, to talk about how this resource is used. We also reviewed, in real-time, water surface area changes, especially during some of the major storms that happened in and near our area recently.

In Video 1 & 2, I walked through our review of a river in Asheville that saw a huge spike in water surface area during the time of Hurricane Helene. We continue to pray for all the communities that were severely affected, and pray that the Father continues to send rescue, help, and comfort to those who were impacted.

As another resource for our science lessons, we stay up to date on the various astronomical events that occur on a daily basis. There is so much you can learn when you look up at the night sky and see what God has created in the heavens and earth!

SOCIAL STUDIES!🇺🇸 Happy Veterans’ Day! Thank you for your service!🌟

As someone who has the honor of coming from a military family — over the years, I appreciate more and more the importance of sharing this with our children and how our family has supported the United States and protecting its freedoms. The experiences that I learned and saw with a Navy-enlisted father, who was deployed for 6 months at a time for close to 20 years of his military service, and my husband saw through his abuelito and several uncles that served, we absolutely appreciate our family’s contributions to the United States.

Honoring national holidays has also been an excellent way to incorporate social studies lessons into our daily curriculum. From MLK Jr. Day to Patriot’s Day (honoring the events that took place during 9-11), we utilize these days to keep learning, honoring, and celebrating the important historical markers in our Nation’s history. We have also been intentional about teaching our children the U.S. pledge of allegiance, as a way to continue this rich historical tradition, and recite it in our daily routine.

A few other resources that have been a great help:

🇺🇸 @homeschoolpop Homeschool Pop is fun, engaging, and a great go-to for social studies, U.S. History, and geography. Homeschool Pop also covers other topics and concepts as well, and usually has playlists grouped by grade level. Wonderful when teaching multiple grade levels.

🇺🇸 @hopscotchsongs With catchy beats, great information, and all around fun, we not only learn U.S. capitals, but also boundaries, science, and tons of math. We can listen in the car or at home, so add to your podcast or watch later playlists as a go-to!

🇺🇸 Visit your local parks, public sites, or fire stations! As featured in our slides, we went to our local fire station on 9-11 to observe the great contribution of those who served during that time and learned about our local resources too!

We thank God that this nation was established as “one nation, under God”, and we pray that no matter where we school, or our children live in the future, that they honor and recognize this foundation!

LANGUAGES🗣️

As someone who was born near the military base at the Tex-Mex border, child to Caribbean mother and Navy-enlisted father, international life and languages have always been in my DNA. I was also told that from early childhood I was fascinated with the Spanish language and have seen that play out throughout my entire life: studying Spanish throughout school, moving to Central America after college to live and work, and later marrying into a Puerto Rican family🇵🇷

Although I have been surrounded by so many different cultures and languages all of my life, learning a second language (or third or fourth) doesn’t exactly come by osmosis. We have had to be intentional with our kids to help teach them Spanish, something that came a bit more passively (if I admit it) when we lived closer to my parents-in-law, and now, after moving, has required us to be more focused as they get older.

A few ways that we are working to make sure our children fully embrace the Spanish language, and hopefully decide to pick up a few more:

✈️Travel — if you have the opportunity to… do it!
Our immersion times have been the most rich and rewarding. Even our frequent trips to visit my in-laws in Philadelphia where their neighborhood has a heavy Puerto Rican and Dominican influence makes a difference. Our kids definitely have bursts of fluidity and recall while with their abuelos.

🇵🇷We also had the opportunity to spend time in Puerto Rico this summer which was amazing and a great way to embrace their Puerto Rican heritage. Unpaid plug… VISIT PUERTO RICO!

⭐️ @onlinespanishforkids — this resource is new to us, but has been such a great opportunity for structured language learning already. Check out the tagged photo on the 2nd slide to learn more. They also offer a free trial lesson if you want to look into it!

MORNINGS! ☀️

When you’re homeschooling, regular routines can sometimes feel a bit elusive as you both balance structure and allow room for flexibility and flow with your kids’ needs (and your own!).

One thing that we try to maintain as a part of our morning routine, to set the tone and order for the day, is our morning prayer 🙏

I wrote a Holy Spirit-inspired prayer/declaration for our kids that is pasted to our wall that they can say each morning, whether on their own or all of us together.

As a clarifier, it is not the ONLY prayer we pray, and our children are learning more and more how to independently flow in their prayers as the Spirit leads them, but this prayer provides an element of intentionality and personal declaration that has been instrumental for not only ourselves but many of our family members.

Just like the disciples asked Jesus in Luke 11:1, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples,” as parents, we need to do the same for our children, as well as model a life of prayer, for our children to see and observe how we establish healthy communication with our Heavenly Father.

BIBLICAL STUDIES!

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up” (Deuteronomy‬ ‭6‬:‭6‬-‭7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬).

The foundation of everything we teach is based on this command: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength” (Deuteronomy‬ ‭6‬:‭5‬ ‭NKJV)‬‬. Our goal is to make sure that our children have a firm foundation that in whatever they do, learn, or encounter, it should be done with the priority of loving the Lord your God with all your heart.

Whether it’s playing golf, learning about Leonardo da Vinci, or calculating the digits of Pi, we want to always incorporate the truth of God’s Word and His love in what we do.

As a result, our children have flourished in their desire to learn about the things of God, and take bold steps for Him. It also provides a firm foundation for the development of their character: showing love, having patience, being kind, exercising self-control, walking in peace with others, being joyful even in the tough times, being gentle with others, staying faithful to the tasks at hand, and being good. We don’t get it right all the time, but it’s amazing to hear our children get each other back on track with the fruits of the Spirit when behavior or actions seem to get out of alignment.

A few resources that keep the Word of God engaging for us, and helps our children independently develop their own desire to learn about God and the Bible include:

🙏 Empowering our children to pray for others, which also develops their own confidence, leadership, and faith

🙏 @veggietalesofficial, especially their devotional books, which gives us a structured focus with scripture, discussion point, and prayer that we do nearly daily

🙏 Any and everything @superbook, @superbookgizmogo. the Superbook app also has lots of learning tools and games.

FINANCIAL LITERACY!💰

“His Lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.’” Matthew‬ ‭25‬:‭21‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“By humility and the fear of the Lord Are riches and honor and life.” Proverbs‬ ‭22‬:‭4‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Although I was not homeschooled as a child, some of my siblings were, so some sort of education was always occurring or lesson being taught. My mother was an accountant by trade, and numbers are her love language, so it was only natural we picked up the same.

As a result, our kids have a natural affinity for counting and numbers, and it would be an understatement to say that they really like math.

Yet we know financial literacy goes far beyond counting and numbers, and there are many concepts I wished I learned earlier that would have set me up for a better understanding of the ever-changing economy we live in. Thankfully, in our digital world, we have access to so much information. Yet, we need godly wisdom and discernment to both teach and navigate finances, and it is something we have felt pressed to do more diligently and intentionally for our children (and ourselves).

We feel a need to go beyond the basics of saving and spending, but also investing, types of currency, understanding the stock market, goods and commodities and everything else in between.

We are by no means finance experts, nor business gurus, but we have learned a lot in our own entrepreneurship journeys, as well as many mistakes and failures. We want our children to grow up debt free and we want to see them excel. So they can be, NOT lovers of money, but good stewards and Kingdom builders and givers.

We have been quick to teach them the foundations of tithing and sowing, being generous, and saving. But, we have also been intentional about finding and using resources that help them learn things we don’t know (and we learn together as a family).

LITERACY!

Reading, literacy, and language arts are a staple for homeschool requirements, and in an ever increasing digital age, sometimes you just need to know how to keep your kids engaged.

As a disclaimer, my kids have “known” how to read from nearly birth, so reading comes intuitively to them, and I am always looking for ways to keep them challenged, as well as make sure the fundamentals are established as they grow.

The local library has been KEY in our homeschooling literacy journey, and if your local library is like ours, it should serve as a great resource for literacy activities, as well as community engagement, resources, and social studies.

If you contact your local library, there is a high possibility that they are able to make special arrangements to provide library tours, teach your kids (and serve as a personal refresher😅) on the Dewey decimal system, how books are made, resources at the library, and so much more, like homeschool hangout days.

GOLF!🏌🏽‍♂️⛳️

As a homeschooling family, extracurricular activities, recess, and opportunities for engagement with other children and families often becomes one of the biggest focal points each week.

I think many of us can agree that we didn’t start homeschooling just because we don’t want our kids to be around other kids (but hey, maybe that was your story🫢😳), but that we want (and many were called) to walk out our kids’ education differently.

Maybe your school system/district/area doesn’t have the resources, focus, or needs you want, or what your child needs. Maybe you want to engage your child in something different? Whatever the case, there are opportunities out there for you!

One particular activity that has become an unexpected staple in our household is GOLF! I grew up a pretty athletics-focused kid, and played just about every traditional support. Yet, golf always felt like the sport that got away! In highschool, during my offseason for basketball, my coach wanted me to try out golf, but we ended up moving the year I was to try it out, and I ended up going the cross country and track field route after we moved. Yet, golf stayed in the back of my mind for years, until one day (once married with kids) we learned about an event in our local area that introduced our kids to golf @bmwcharityproam. This one event connected us with an amazing individual that then told us about @thefirsttee @firstteeupstate which blossomed into the most unexpected, timely, and perfect sport for us (and for a parent that was not exactly thrilled about her kids being in a full on contact sport!).

Since 2023, we have definitely become “golf people” and have learned so much about the game. But more importantly, our kids have found a sport that fits their needs and they are truly starting to grow in leaps in bounds where we were completely green (pun intended) to the game before then.
